Kuroko Shirai is a supporting character in the non-yuri anime A Certain Magical Index and a main character in the spin-off series A Certain Scientific Railgun. A mischievous and blunt girl, who is a level 4 with a teleportation ability. She is insanely good at combat and always completes her duties as a member of judgment.

- She is in love with Mikoto Misaka, bluntly showing her affection in public by hugging her, calling her onee-sama, and occasionally trying to kiss her. She considers Misaka and herself to be a couple.
- She tails Misaka in order to protect her wherever she goes.
- She can act sneaky and perverted towards Misaka, like when she told her to undress.
- She has a slightly Masochistic trait in that she likes to be tortured by Misaka's love whip and being snapped at by her. She tells Misaka that this is why she'll never stop being her vanguard.
- On multiple occasions Kuroko has implicated gayness, like in A Certain Scientific Railgun when they were dealing with Kiyama Harumi (from the level upper arc) and she began to undress in a public cafe and Kuroko tells her to stop, Kiyama says to Kuroko "Look at me for a moment, it's not like I'm anything particularly special, no man in here is going to care about seeing my body." and Kuroko angrily replies back to her "Everyone has different tastes so you can't really know! Besides, it's not only men you should be thinking about!" referring to the fact that some women like women too.
- She seems to enjoy showing her body to Misaka, running around naked in front of her and wearing the tiniest bikinis she can find when they go to the beach.
